New Delhi, 21st Nov 2010 – It’s the end of another year soon and it’s the season for peace. Why not send a ‘Poems for Peace’ greetings card to your loved ones and in doing so help a needy child go to school?
Within the walls of Full Circle Bookshop in Khan Market, New Delhi, poetry on the theme of peace filled the air on Sunday November 21st as UNITED SIKHS and the American Embassy School, New Delhi, held a poetry reading to spread the message of peace and unity on Guru Nanak Sahib Ji’s Gurpurab. The sale of greetings cards displaying the peace poems was launched after the poetry reading.
The poems which resounded in the air were read by students of the American Embassy School, New Delhi. They were poems that the students had written for a worldwide project called Poems for Peace. Founded by an American lady, Lauri Hoffman Bunting, Poems for Peace aims to provide an opportunity for people to discover similarities, embrace differences, develop compassion and foster forgiveness.
In order that the poems be circulated more widely and to spread the message of peace through education, sixteen of the poems written by the American Embassy School students have been selected and printed as greetings cards. These greetings cards will be sold and all proceeds from the card sales will be spent by UNITED SIKHS on sponsoring the education of underprivileged children through its STARAE project https://www.unitedsikhs.org/starae/  Harjyot Kaur, UNITED SIKHS’ Empowerment and Education Director, commented, “For me, each card is more beautiful than the next! Each poem contains a special message, straight from the heart of the student who wrote it. Reading the poems brings you lots of peace!”
Dr. Barbara Sirotin, the American Embassy School, New Delhi Middle School Principal
and member of the American Embassy School Peace Committee said, “The Poems for Peace project provided an opportunity for students to express the possibilities, wonder and fears about their individual lives, our communities and our wider world. Reflection and expression were the wonderful results.”
In the words of the founder, Lauri Bunting, “Ignorance breeds prejudice, apathy and fear; knowledge breeds compassion. When we know, we care. ‘Poems for Peace’ taps into the health, wealth and wisdom of youth worldwide. Through the writing and sharing of beliefs, memories, hopes and fears, cross-cultural connections are established. When individuals exchange personal truths, divisions disintegrate and a common thread is revealed. All poems are posted at www.poemsforpeace.org allowing for each message to be echoed throughout the world.”
There are two sets of eight greetings cards, Set A and Set B; each set is priced at INR 250/ $10 USD/£5 plus postage and packing Click here to view the cards.
